You have to rub your crystal ball and look how a backgammon position is most likely to unfold. With more experience will come an understanding of what is going on in the position. In this position for example I wouldn't hesitate to make the ace point. That's not because I've always known it's right to make the ace point but have learned over time after the bot somewhere along the lines threw the red flag blunder in my face.
So what is going to happen? You're going to enter, play a six, and your opponent is on roll. Aside from looking ahead and thinking about the cube that should be coming with either play, which play are you more comfortable taking the cube with and why? Your opponent will be doubling on the volatility of the position and his attacking chances mostly, the race is close and will be his fallback plan. What's that you say, attacking chances? So he's going to be hitting you with a lot of rolls. Well if he's hitting you loose and you hit back, do you want a blot in your home board or would you rather equalize board strength so when he does hit if you hit back you want be talking to yourself "damn, I wish I didn't have that inner board blot".
You also have to assess the important of the bar point. Yes, it's a landing point and a blocking point if this gets turned into a race but that's not the most likely way this plays out. Also, it isn't much of a blocking point since the opponent is already anchored on your 5pt. Get your ship ready for the storm because it's a brewin'.
