In Response To: one Stick match questions (svilo)

My feelings are that you should try to get the consent of the players involved in the match if you're going to post it. Legally you can post any match you want without legal repercussions but some in the bg community may frown upon it or think it's wrong. It depends a lot on what match you're going to post. For example a match between myself and Falafel, I can guarantee neither of us give a shit if you post any match we ever play, whether we play a 1 PR or an 8 PR, post away. There are people though who don't like their bad matches to leak out, they feel embarrassed, don't want people to know how poorly they played, etc... For their sake unless there's some real reason to publish the match (like it was the finals of a live event for instance) I see no need to publish it.

I know I've made massive blunders in the past and plan on making some huge ones in the future. Everyone does it. By publishing it that is likely to never happen to me again because I really remember the position and what the hell I was thinking. I don't normally remember how many times I beat person X or even if I ever played player Y, a lot of people remember that kind of stuff and I just don't, but I do remember a huge cube blunder I made playing Steve Sax at -2 -4 years ago, I do remember a bearoff rewhip that Neil sent over and I dropped that was a massive blunder, I do remember recently I sent Ray one of the biggest jokes of a cube I've ever sent for apparently no reason, I do remember overlooking a play in a blitz again Weever years ago. I remember them to punish myself, to improve my game, and in part I'm sure because they were all made available publicly.

As for publishing your own matches without the consent of your opponent I feel the area is a little more gray here. Is there a reason you didn't get your opponent's consent? If you didn't get it and he wasn't otherwise aware you might publish it, is there a reason you just can't change his name to 'Player2' and publish it that way?

Some people I'm sure also feel that they don't want their online matches published because they aren't giving them anywhere near their full attention. We all do other things while we're playing online and our game suffers from it when we do. I know I'm constantly updating rollouts, checking my forums, and watching Cheers when I play. There are some places you go though you know your matches are publicly accessible and you have to expect they may be published. Safeharborgames for example is where Michael Petch tosses up a lot of matches that are played there for anyone who wants to have a look at them. Playing on Gridgammon you never know when Iancho might be watching and collecting stats for his project.
