Yes, as you mention, most chess tournaments, most scrabble tournaments, etc... That is not what we're really talking about here with backgammon. With backgammon we're talking about social games on free online servers. You have recreational players being recorded all the time in backgammon whereas these other things you mention they are tournament players. (even if they're bad tournament players, they are still tournament players and know the rules for such events)
Then you launch in to sports, where you're talking about paid professional athletes. Boxers and tennis players get paid to show up at an event, bg players don't. These are again professionals. I play tennis about 7 times a week now, I challenge you to find my footage. If I was a bg player though it could be everywhere and I'm sure if that kind of footage was available for all your rec level players of all these games lots of people would have problems with it.
What occurs publicly is far from public in a lot of ways but that's more of a side bar that I don't care to get in to.
