I do not imagine a score that would make me split or prefer the 9 to 10,5.

I agree that D (Down, 13/9) must be worse than N (Near, 13/10 6/5) at any score. I would guess that even U (Up, 24/20) or V (Variant-up, 24/23 24/21) -- though neither is in my top three choices -- is better than D.

However, I believe that E (Each, 24/21 6/5) is the best play at gammon save (refer to the final sentence on page 69).
