- 1: Double/drop
- OTB I'd drop quickly, looks horrible for Black. As quiz entry, I still drop. 1s, 2s, and 6s are great for White, and 35 and 45 are OK making another board point. It is hard to find Black's wins, and easy to find many gammons for White
- 2: 24/21 2/1*
- Passing up the 5pt early is always asking to be dinged. But here making it seems to leave Black too much freedom and to many opportunites. OTOH making the anchor is pretty valuable too. And 2/1* puts the slightly silly 2pt-checker to some use and makes it hard for Black to put his position together next roll.
- 3: 13/9 12/9
- Certainly the straight-forward play, and the one to measure other plays against. The question is, is it good enough? Or rather, it seems to be the best quit play, but can White do even better by attacking straight away? I don't think so - for starters, making the point gives immediate payoff on Black's sixes which now breaks a priming point. Also, while White's 4s are good, we still get a shot at the runner after 41 42 43 45. If White boldly plays 11/7 6/3*, all 3s, plus 11, 12, 16, 25 are pretty grim.
- 4: b/24* 8/5
- After the hit White has 1 back to 2 and the better position. Surely if Black fails to hit back (half the numbers miss) White is Big Boss. If Black hits one, White still isn't doing too badly - both having 2 back, and Black's position isn' t too flexible. The double hits (16, 14) are bad, but otoh, the dances (55,56,66) are very sweet.
For comparison, after b/22 8/7, White doesn't seem to have much of an advantage - still better position, but now Black has the initiative, and 6s jump immediately.- 5: Double/drop
- An ace point game by itself is a clear drop. Here the two open points would normally mean a takeable position, but for White's checker on the bar. White's 11 point is a small plus, but not enough - it won't give Black much trouble in coming round, and while they are dormant attackers, any counterattack will have a huge downside. Also any hitting from the stripped 11 and 13 points will create not one but 2 blots. Lots of gammons in this one.
