Never heard this before...

I don't think I've ever actually read it anywhere either, but there seems to be a sizable number of players who do this. I'd estimate that about 30% of the time I get to 2-away the cube comes whipping across at the first opportunity - this is playing on FIBS, mostly against players in the 1700s or low 1800s. I have no idea where it comes from, but it's a pervasive practice. Lot's of people handle the cube this way, despite gnu's insistence that it's wrong.

(agree about 2-away 2-away having been discussed to death, and it's not a myth, it's correct play)
