1) Doubles like this are notoriously difficult to play - lots of possibilities and often the best move is one that I don't even consider. I like making the bar point since it gives us a nice 4prime. The choice then seems between hitting on the ace or moving the runners up.
Hitting has the advantage of tempo, plus it leaves the fewest shots (we'll be up by 26 pips, so let's try not to leave too many shots). But it has the disadvantage of cutting our army in half - the anchor will be fully 10 points away from the rest of the gang. U keeps the checkers in communication, but we abandon the anchor and leave three more shots than the hitting play. OTOH, when we are hit on the 13 we lose fewer pips than being hit on the ace. OTOOH, the hitting play means we'll have a nice anchor to enter on.
Thematically, we're now ahead in the race, and if our game plan is to win the race, then we've got to abandon the anchor before long - this roll gives us the chance to do just that, so that's what I'll do.
20/14(2) 13/7(2)
2) White has escaped all his runners, but other than that has no real assets so I'm not itching to whip the cube across. 3-1 6-1 4-2 and doublets are market losers (12), so given the advantage in race (20 pips) and threats (3 blots) I somewhat reluctantly think it's a cube. A take for black since white is so stacked. D/T
3) Hit to take away half black's roll and possibly get another whack at the blot on the 20, or at least possibly prevent black from covering it. bar/22 9/5*
4) Hit twice - black's ace point blot makes it worth the risk. bar/20 10/5(2)* 6/1*. There's something to be said for the safe bar/10 13/8 since we're 19 pips up after the move, but I don't like the look of all those candlesticks 2 points apart.
5) What kind of game is this? A "four corner" mutual holding game? A back game? What's thematically correct? I like to transition away from a backgame if I can, so I'm just going to hoover up the blots and then slot the 5 point. QF tells me this must be incorrect, but I'm going to do it anyway. 24/23* 18/17*/16* This nearly equalizes the race (net gain of 60pips if I counted right) which screws our timing for the backgame, but still gives us enough deficit for the holding game strategy to work for us.
