Yes, you would need a valid windows license.

On a side note, I happened to load Wine (windows emulator) onto OSX last night and at first I was happy, GridGammon client loaded, but it can't seem to render OpenGL (3d). I could see he lobyb but not watch a game. I upgraded to the latest XQuartz as well (X windows manager that Wine uses) and still no go. When I get some time I'll rebuild Wine myself and see what happens. If I can get the 3D support working then the GG client would likely work without the need for any windows license.

I have a suspicion that on Linux, the Wine emulator would probably be able to run GridGammon. This seems to be a *possible* OSX related glitch.
