Your experiment is not meant to produce real OtB results. I will make no claim that if you're purposely trying to pick up the dice as fast as possible you will barely lose any time, perhaps the two tenths of a second that you suggest. If you're playing a regular match though that is not what is going on and it's there you will lose on average, again I'm guessing from my own experiment, about a second. Remember the average age of the players in the US is far greater than that of players in Europe. The dexterity just isn't there. I'm quite certain naturally I pick up dice swifter (faster) than most players.

Keep in mind that when you roll, the dice must leave the cup simultaneously!

The US rules say this, but they also seem to at least somewhat contradict this.

then simultaneously tossing them out at a discernible height...
Both dice must leave the cup before either die contacts the board

The only time I've ever seen a roll deemed invalid is when the latter occurs. The dice of course never leave the cup simultaneously but we know what's meant. It's easy to make one drag behind the other to split them.

A lot of things seem like common sense to me and I'm not good at coming up with examples of why it is better one way or another, I just feel I know it is. This discussion reminds me of the legal moves discussion and if legal moves were implemented should random kibitzers be allowed to point out legal moves. Again, I'm of the no how, no way, are you kidding me side of the coin as was Neil. I think we both know how messy that could be but pinpointing concrete examples is a job let to someone like Munitz. He seems to do a much better job of that than I ever do.

For the most part you should simplify rules to not have too much action over the table unless there is some significant gain. You just want less action moving over the checkers and the dice. This is so second nature to me I don't really know how to explain it.
