In Response To: A Very Tough Ruling in the Cleveland Finals (Stick)

>> For the most part you should simplify rules to not have too much action over the table unless there is some significant gain. You just want less action moving over the checkers and the dice. This is so second nature to me I don't really know how to explain it.

I think I understand you quite well, even though you don't know how to explain it ;-)

And I agree. That was why I wrote, for my opinion on this rule: I'm not sure yet. US rule is very clear and simply - so for that matter it's a plus. Yet there are situations where it clearly could be more fair and equal for the players - otherwise we would never have seen this thread appear I guess.

The DBgF rule allows for the exception, and handles it quite well (stating clearly how you should do if you want to roll LHS and when you may stop rolling LHS). But even that rule give way for the occasional dispute.

That was why the suggestion came up. It was MortenAagren who suggested the completely open rule at the DBgF forums, when any roll with dice flat on the playing surface, board, bar, checkers, etc. should count. The initial responses was (including mine) that people didnt like the idea of dice on checkers and other (at times non-flat surfaces) should count. But there was some merit to it anyway, removing the (very few) disputes that comes up every now and then, using the DBgF rule.

But as you say (and I wholeheartedly agree), if the benefit is not worth it, don't change the rule (or the mechanics of the game) to something more complicated.

I want as much input as possible that's why I threw this idea into the debate!

---

BTW: I didn't time myself going as fast as I could, I went the same speed in all scenarios. But I'm afraid that I'm on the faster side anyway like yourself, being used to play a lot of clocked matches, I prefer taking my time over the problems, rather than the mechanics of the game :-)

---

Finally, thanks for a couple of well thought responses - much better input than your initial "no no and no, keep your hands the hell of my side" - which frankly didn't do any good for me, in trying to decide which rule I like best :-)
