2) QF says hitting twice is right, but I'm still not really comfortable with these aggressive plays, at least when looking down the barrel of a 5 point board.
I'd like to tidy up - yes, white is behind in the race, but black has two men back and white has some kind of formation so tidying up is good, especially when the aforementioned 5 point board looms. But we can't tidy up. The "safe" 16/9 leaves 20 shots if I counted right, but 15/8 is even worse. I'll go with 16/9 - at least it slots a useful point.
3) This didn't seem very interesting until I saw the cube had been turned and the match score. If black takes, he'll redouble and play for the match. Is white good enough here to play for the match? And what about gammons?
I'm trying to see how black has a take here, and failing to see it. Too good? An ace point game gives loses about 20% gammons. Not sure how much more a third checker back gives (I should know this by now, but I don't) , but I don't think it tips the balance far enough towards too good, so I'll just cash. R/P
4) I'm not seeing a very high gammon rate, despite the 6 checkers that are back - the race is not that lopsided, and black's checkers aren't blocked. Fours and fives allow black to preserve his timing, sixes are blocked, and the other numbers allow black to play in his homeboard and not crunch just yet, so black isn't out of it. OTOH, white has only 66 and 63 that force a shot this roll, but ensuing rolls will provide more forced shots.
So, it looks like black can take here - especially at a match score that gets black to Crawford if he wins, and only leaves him down 3-2 if he loses. I wouldn't double as white. ND/T
5) I tend to be cube shy in holding games, but black's blocked runner changes the picture away from a simple holding game. Gazing ahead at the likely position two moves from now, white will have moved his two builders off the midpoint and have 13 checkers in the zone, black will have cleared his outfield and the points on 12 and 18 will continue to be held by the respective sides. White will hen have timing point to make another play without coming off the 18, possibly POH. I like the chances, so I'll double here. Black's in trouble - even if he wins the holding portion of the game, he'll still have to escape his blocked runner. I think he has to pass, despite the nice board and the holding position. And then there's the immediate shot at the 17...D/P
