It looks like the players in Variant 3 were playing according to Simborg's Rule :-)

The role of the blot on the 10pt is (IMHO) to aim at the 4pt, which gains importance as we have the 5pt made.

At least that's what I thought when choosing 11/10 as the fourth ace.

Bar/24 11/10 8/7(2) is bad in the original position because splitting is necessary to avoid getting counterprimed and to put some pressure on White to clean up her blots, as Tim said.
