Seidel's response that backgammon has been solved by the computer and the top players pretty much all play the same is most insightful and hard to refute. I don't see much difference watching two giants play as watching XG play against itself.
However, this critique only applies to the top level. For the other 99.9 percent of backgammon players there is plenty of variance is style and play, and that is where the game is likely to grow the most.
For the top levels, I have long advocated for making the game more complex by playing Nackgammon, The Simborg Rule, Backgammon to Lose, and other variations that make the game more complicated and required creativity to play well.
