Daily Quiz 4/5/11

1. Always make the 5pt? That's the first play that leaps to my eye. Leaving a double shot is pretty bold, though, so let's look at alternatives. I can't see anything else that I really like. 9/7 6/5 leaves only one blot but if I'm going to play 6/5 then I'm going to make the 5pt. Something like 13/11 9/8 or 23/21 9/8 is relatively safe but doesn't seem to improve our position much. I'll just go ahead and make the 5pt with 7/5 6/5.
2. Difficult. Ignoring the score for a moment, it looks to me that Black has a take. If Yellow dances, then Black looks to be in pretty good shape; any 1, and most 4's, give Black an advantage. If Yellow hits and Black doesn't roll an immediate 2, then I don't think Black can take any more, with two checkers behind Yellow's five-prime versus Yellow's single checker behind Black's five-prime. So there are market losers, but I'm still not certain that Yellow has a double for money. ATS, Black is more eager to drop gammonish doubles so I'm more confident about Yellow's double, but would still be inclined to take as Black. D/T.
3. Unfortunately I don't know my numbers here but I'm guessing it's D/T. A pass for money, of course, since doublets are still needed and not all of them work, but ATS the takepoint is a lot lower.
4. The double looks clear and I would pass. Black has to hit to get back in the game, and his 1pt blot weakens his hits a lot.
5. I believe that 13/9 6/5 is not that far behind for money, and ATS when I'm itching to send over a gammicidal cube, I think slotting should be best.
