Phil,

I agree, but the problem I see is many players will stay away from Backgammon fearing - rightly - that they have little chance if they come up against a giant who plays like a computer program - there IS a comparison to chess which also has been more or less played out. However Chess is not a gambling game like Poker and there is more choice to choose your opening because you are not rolling dice. Chess tournaments are more interesting because of the ratings system which is more or less reliable. And with Poker they also have computer programs, but the human element of bluffing is beyond computers as far as I know.

I think we're even seeing this kind of thing in Golf for example, these young guys are preparing with computer programs, Ipods etc and catching up or suddenly overtook Tiger and Phil The creative side is being lost because everyone who wants to win trusts the computer's analysis on playing the percentages. OK it works but there is no soul in the game any more.

I actually played Eric Seidel in some last chance tourney in Las Vegas, he remarked to his kibbitzer friend that even some unknown idiot like myself was good enough to beat him and that;s why he was giving up backgammon, not like the old days I suppose where he must have had an edge against most people - unfortunately he got real lucky and ended up winning the match anyway the SOB .. .lol..I didn;t take it personally he looks like a good guy. By the way this was pre computer days and I in any case don't use them too much.
