Seidel during a tourney match with mikeg -
"...even some unknown idiot like myself was good enough to beat him and that's why he was giving up backgammon..."
Seidel (paraphrased) during the linked interview about a possible resurgence in backgammon -
'I don't think so...it's kind of a solved game because of bots...there will be too many people who knew how to play if it became popular...'
I was very pleased with the honesty of Seidel's assessment that backgammon could not become very popular. If one reads between the lines of his statement about mikeg during their Vegas tourney meeting and his interview, one may conclude that Seidel does not see much future in backgammon because he does not see its gambling profitability. This successful professional gambler just does not see much of an edge in backgammon. He believes that he can outplay many poker opponents. But he simply does not feel he would have such an advantage if backgammon became popular. To understand backgammon’s limited popularity, just follow the money.
