  • The score. It's -3 -1 Crawford which is virtual dmp. The extra gammon losses that you would suffer at other scores do you no harm. You're trying to figure out the play with the highest win percentage, that's all. (I am not inferring that bar/18 wouldn't be correct at other scores, just that especially at this score the play is clear)

  • Timing. This is what it is mostly about. If you play 13/8 instead you aren't left with many pips to play before you start crashing your board. You will need to escape that back checker, which will likely be more blocked in than it is currently as your opponent will make either the 8pt or the 7pt. By coming out /18 you keep the midpoint pips to play and do what you want to do anyway, spring a checker. Your best chance in this game is a well timed ace point game. Timing is key here.

  • Pressure on the outfield. While it may not exert a ton of pressure on the outfield, it is a sore spot for your opponent. He would love to play freely in the outfield without your presence. With that blot on the bar point though some of his numbers become awkward to play and leave indirects from the bar. Examples like 41 51 42 52 etc... These numbers will now either play awkwardly or leave indirects from the bar or both. Your opponent's position already has his spares in a poor spot, that outfield presence helps put salt on that wound.

  • Next turn. There are even some rolls where you won't be hit, like 43 for example, and your opponent will safety his two blots. Now in the upcoming sequence you will play from your midpoint and leave the bar point blot there (or shift with an ace) to keep pressure on his midpoint.
