would it be at all possible to operationalize the concept of difficulty more precisely so that it could be implemented and utilized in bot analysis results

A very simple approach (but very good for a start, in my opinion) would be to express your performance in relation to a reference bot, i.e. the errors that the reference bot would make if he had to go through your decisions are subtracted from your errors. Of course that is exactly what XG already offers as an option and hardly anybody likes it.
