Daily Quiz 4/7/11

- 1: 22/16 11/8
- Blue should still play this as a normal position, it may become a back game, but that is for later. Thus it seems right to do something to improve the back checkers, so 13/4 is out (and 11/2 probably worse), making 24/16 and 22/16 the possible 6s. I think both of them should be paired with 11/8 - it has value to lift the blot and getting a spare on the 8, White may already be thinking about breaking the anchor here, and being able to do it with a hit is always nice. Also the alternate 3s are not too hot - 22/13 seems a little timid, and 24/18 21/18 makes the bar point anchor which is nice, but breaks the inner board anchor which is bad. I prefer 22/16 over 24/18, because it stays farthest back and still aims at the 2pt-blot
- 2: 24/23 13/11
- White has advanced his anchor, so Blue would like to do the same. The mid point is fully stacked so Blue would like to unstack it - and the 11pt is out of direct range. 13/11 24/23, simple plays for simple minds.
- 3: 24/23 14/13 6/5*/4
- It looks ugly and 6s may be uncomfortable, but I think Blue is supposed to protect his racing lead here. He may still launch an attack next turn, or he is free to concentrate on racing without needing to cover a blot - and of course he will not have been hit back.
Also while the cube is not turned now, it will go double/take at some point and then simple games with few gammons will suit Blue.
- 4: 22/21 13/10
- The 5pt may be the 5pt, but here at GG the anchor is valuable, and Blue has reasonable chances to make the 5pt later.
- 5: Double/take
- Trying the Keith count on this, I find White to be 7 pips shy of a money double. Around the proper doubling point a pip is worth more than 2% at such a short race, but it loses value when you go farther from the point, 1.5%/pip would put White around 12%. Also noting that at least Keith adjusts the same number of wastage pips for W and B, I try the Kleinman on the raw pip counts, yielding between 12-13%.
TP with the auto-recube is a plain 11%, and White seems to have just enough to take.
