Sure, there might be many super-unusual, rarely-seen positions that are unsolved. That wouldn't take away from the claim that the game is "basically solved," though.

You should be having this conversation not with me, however, but with the people who think the bots have figured out the game so thoroughly that we can trust them when they say a play is .01 better on the opening roll. If that's true, and pretty much every backgammon debate can be solved merely by saying "show it to the bot," then the game does lose some of its luster from my perspective. A made-up position with 9 checkers on the bar doesn't breathe the life back into the game, it's just a novelty.
