In Response To: Daily Quiz 4/9/11 (Stick)

1. It looks like a choice between 23/22 13/9 allowing a rear checker to see some daylight, and 6/2*/1* attacking. If we play 23/22 13/9 then I think only 62 and 52 hit our 9pt blot (I think White will PoH with 53, though maybe I'm wrong about that). The double hit is tempting when we have the stronger board, but it is hard to cover the 1pt. I'll play purely with 23/22 13/9 though I'm really not sure.

2. This looks like a take to me. White has some attacking rolls but most allow return shots or break the prime or both, and White still has to run off the barpoint anchor. If Blue were anchored on the 21pt then I think it would be ND/T, but here White should have enough to double. D/T.

3. Difficult. One game plan is to hit in order to gain a tempo to hit White's blots or consolidate our own blots or both. If we don't hit then I guess the plan is to try to block White and clean up right away. In the latter case, we could try making the 6-away point with 13/9, accompanied by either 12/10 or 17/15, or we could try to minimize blot count with 17/13 12/10. The problem with these options is that none of them is really safe. White, with the stronger board and more checkers back, will be happy to hit loose and our position could quickly deteriorate. I'd rather go down fighting, so I hit. I'd rather not leave a direct shot so I switch points with bar/23 4/2*(2). The last 2 is still not clear. We could clean up two blots with 12/10 or duplicate White's 4's by slotting the bar or play 17/15. I guess I will try slotting the bar. So bar/23 9/7 4/2*(2).

4. Usually it's wrong to run off the anchor voluntarily in a mutual holding game, although I recently got dinged for applying this rule of thumb too blindly. However, in that position, my anchor was further back than my opponent's and my timing was, I think, a little worse than it is here. Though I could believe that it's right to run with 20/13, I'll hold the fort here with 8/1. (8/7 8/3 was my first instinct but I think that leaves us too stripped; in particular 6's are bad.)

5. Keith count says drop and I don't see why this should be an exceptional position. D/P.
