I wouldn't phrase the choice here that way; I'd say the choice is between hitting and making the 5pt. Obviously if you hit with 6/3* you're going to continue with 3/1; this would be true even back in the days when people didn't like making the 1pt. Furthermore if there were no hit involved, you'd certainly prefer the 5pt to the 1pt.

Here I think I'd make the 5pt. We're ahead in the race so that suggests safe play. While the blitz could work, since we have ten checkers in the zone and White has another outfield blot, White has only 4 dancing rolls and has many return shots that dissipate our advantage. Even if making the 5pt isn't the top play, I don't think it can be wrong by much.
