52S-62S-65K-32>-32

I've looked at quite a few 5pt/4pt vs 1pt positions in the early game, including this one. For the fourth roll positions 6xS-65K-32>-32 (where x is a 2, 3 or 4), make the 1pt. (If you change the first roll to the offbeat 51R, where White has no new builder/blot, I think making the 5pt is better.)

51S-62R-65K-32>-32 150
In fifth roll positions, Blue can have a fourth checker on his 8pt, and that makes the decision closer. For the artificial position 41T-6xS-65K-32>-32, I think making the 5pt is slightly better.
Instead of 41T, if you give Blue split back checkers (giving him more numbers to hit in the outfield) with the standard opening move 52S, as in the left-hand position, making the 1pt becomes right again.
As I recall, 51S-62S-65K-32>-32, shown in the right-hand diagram (where Opp's reply of 51S-62S is a mistake but sometimes still played) is an exception. In that case, it is slightly better to make the 5pt. The way I remember it is that Blue's 54 is duplicated on the left, while on the right 44 (whether Blue is hit on his 7pt or not) hits in the outfield.
I don't remember for sure about 51S-63S-65K-32>-32 (right-hand position but with White's builder on 10pt instead of 11pt), but Opp's 51S-63S reply is a near-blunder so that position arises even less often. (1pt is very slightly better, I think.)
Basically, in early game positions that typically arise, it's usually right to hit and bounce, making the ace point (a play that experts virtually never made in the 70s). It is a valuable tempo that deprives Opp of offensive point-making numbers and gives her 4 fanning numbers.
