Because your 24pt checker is threatening the opponent's 2pt checker and your opponent's 22pt checker is threatening your 9pt checker.

Since the race is even, these potential hits will have a huge impact on victory chances, so keep your 24pt checker where it is and remove the other threat (the best 3 moves do that).
