Why not the anchor?

  • The race is close and making the anchor leaves a direct 6 shot on your side of the board that if hit is quite costly in this respect.

  • While your opponent does technically have 10 men in the zone, usually a key number of checkers to pay attention to if you are fearful of being blitzed, these men are not well diversified, the blot on the deuce point is plain ugly, and any attempt to blitz will weaken his position as he'll likely have to concede part of his broken prime if he does.

  • If we make the anchor we also alleviate the pressure on our opponent's ugly blotted deuce point. We wouldn't mind having another go at it next turn if our opponent is unable to cover. Note also that aces are duplicated in a sense for our opponent wanting to anchor, 23/22, and wanting to hit our blot if left there, 2/1*.

  • While not an inner board anchor, we already have a decent anchor for the position at hand in the 17 point anchor. It's a bridge in our opponent's broken mini prime and will allow our checkers to escape a lot more freely if it was not there.

  • Couple with the other factors we also have the stronger board so we shouldn't be fearful of our opponent attacking us at this point. If he does try to attack the attack will be much to deep in general in his home board to be effective. Our stronger board + number of men in our zone + our diversification + him not having an anchor is more than ample reason to not fret so much over anchoring up when there are other more important priorities to take care of this turn.

  • Lastly, break down the numbers in your head if you can. Which play wins the most single games (the dmp play)? Not anchoring. Which play wins more gammons? Not anchoring. Which play loses less gammons? Anchoring. So anchoring only wins 1/3 categories so the fear of being gammoned would have to be quite high for that category to overcome the other two.
