The following is both for information purposes for those who are curious, and for soliciting suggestions:
So...I read here all about the US action against online gambling sites, as well as the parent post of this thread about TMG, where I have/had an account for many years. I proceeded to try to log in to TMG today, and failed. Ugh. I tried again from time to time, and failed. Ugh. I checked my email address that I had for that account. No email from them. No surprise.
Then...I managed to log in (all of this is today US Pacific Time, GMT-8 I believe). Woo hoo! I immediately went to "withdraw", checked out all my options, and realized the only way I could withdraw as a US citizen was by check. So I tried that, and it worked, or so it seems. My withdrawal was over 2000 euros, which according to them means they will Fed Ex my check. Cool. In Euros. Less cool, but not insurmountable in theory I suppose. Spent some time trying to figure out how to cash such a check if it were in fact to appear. More on that later....
Checked email again to see if they confirmed my withdrawal. No email from them. :( Later, a couple of hours perhaps, perhaps less than that, I tried logging in again (not sure why, just because). Got a message that they no longer supported that client (or words to that effect), and that I should visit their website and download a new client. Visited the site, read the terms and conditions, got to the point where it says invalid for citizens of Malta and USA, and decided not to download the new software. Didn't want to somehow invalidate their obligation to send me my money. Note that I downloaded their software years ago when there seemed to be no legal ambiguity. Note also that the "deposit" button has been inactive for me there for a couple of years or so, going by memory, but the withdrawal button has always been active.
So, perhaps I got lucky and got my money out within a narrow window of time (note that today is a weekend day, surely nothing has been even possible to have been sent yet). Or not. Suppose Fed Ex shows up with my check a few days from now. Any ideas on how to turn that into cash, or at least a deposit into my US bank account (I am a US citizen residing in the US, and know no foreigners. Please no Nigerian jokes....). Will my US bank refuse to cash it? Or will they try to accept it, only to be rebuffed by the agents of hope and change (i.e. the US government)? Should I consider trying to open a foreign bank account with the check (Mexico is closest, but still logistically difficult to get to, let alone know how to proceed from there), then closing the account for cash after the check clears (if it clears)?
Suggestions/comments welcome.
