That's probably possible. By "good practice" you probably mean reaching a given level of significance (which is up to personal choice to some extent, I'd think). If we restrict ourselves to two play choices and min_trials is not too small, I think the main parameters influencing the level of significance are max_trials/min_trials, # of jsd's and min_trials/stepsize, where by "stepsize" I mean what you refer to in your final question, i.e. stepsize=1 for stopping anytime, stepsize=36 for stopping after multiples of 36 only etc.

I can do a little parameter study, but I am going to head off to Copenhagen soon, so don't expect any results before next week.
