What would your play be early in a long match? I don't know, it looks close. Arguments for making the 20-point:
- A wise man has said that people don't make anchors often enough;
- White has a lot of attack material ready to unload, with 11 checkers in the zone;
- We may make the 5 point in any case later, as we have building material ready, whereas if we do not make the golden point now, we may get pointed on or attacked, and may not make the 20-point at all.
There are counter arguments, one of them being that we are behind in the race so we don't want to reduce contact by making the golden point, and as another argument, if we make the 5 point and then have an exchange of hits, we gain a lot of ground in the race and benefit from the made 5 point in the hitting exchange.
Now look at the match score. You are 3-away, your opponent 4 away. You don't want to lose a gammon, here, and especially not after a cube turn. If I am right that for money the decision is close, than here you should make the 20-point to reduce the risk of a gammon loss.
