One of the advantages of backgammon for knockout tournaments is that there are no ties or draws - no need to resort to crap like blitz or "armageddon" games as in certain chess events.
But isn't this a disadvantage for Swiss? Without the possibility (in chess, likelihood) of half-point margins, there's a more likely chance of a playoff being needed.
In principle, yes... but in practice, backgammon tournaments are run with enough rounds to be able to determine a single winner without much trouble.
