Whopper for money to not make the 4 pt.

Right, a whopper with cheese even, and the play that you often saw made once upon a time, G (Gremlin split, 24/23 8/7(2) 6/5)), is fifth best according to a 324-trial trunc I did many years ago.

...after playing 8/7(2) 6/5, it might be better to not play the 4th ace since splitting in the face of the extra builders from 54D isn't so good and is risky.

I wouldn't go quite that far (though I haven't rolled it out). Rather than stop at three aces (if legally allowed) as shown in the left-hand diagram below, I would prefer playing the fourth ace in the right-hand diagram. However, it must be close, and eschewing the 24/23 ace would be better in some similar positions (most notably after Opp has played 55P).
