On the topic of armageddon games and penalty-kick shootouts, I don't particularly like them either.

It comes down to priorities. Do you want to keep things moving or do you want the most skilful player to win? If you want to keep things moving then there's no question that a knockout is a great way to go. Some of us, though, are interested (at least some of the time) in increasing the skill factor. It's pretty clear that penalty shootouts and armageddon matches in soccer and chess do not increase the chances that the more skilful players win.
