I have always believe that the goal should be shortening matches, not lengthening them. The argument that the longer the match the more likely the skillful player will win is certainly true if the choice is limited to playing a single match; but if you played, say, 2 out of 3 matches to 5 or 7, I think that would require much more skill than one match to 11 or 15. It is in these lower scores that the cube decisions and checker players can often become very complex because of the different take points, gammon values, and recube vig.
Aside from the skill factor, the shorter matches are certainly more exciting for both the players and spectators as you have more "critical points" where the match is on the line, or you can get to Crawford etc. (I always use the example of Tennis which gets exciting every game after the second or third point because they break the match up into so many smaller segments. Picture a tennis match where the first to win 100 points wins and see how boring the first 180 points are compared to the current scoring system.)
