I think it's fine that they want to play on line, and I can fully understand their reluctance to play live at this time until they know the game better and feel more comfortable over the board. Transportation, time, and money are all issues with college kids, but also, I am making sure that part of the lesson plan for college students is to learn Cluster Counting so they can count pips better over the board...that is one of the things that keeps a lot of people from being comfortable playing live.

Once we get a lot more people playing on line, they will eventually matriculate to live play. Already 3 of the Northwestern Students have joined the Chicago Meetup Group, which gets together for live events about once a month; and some of the Northwestern kids say they are very interested in playing in the Tuesday night and Wednesday night tournaments in Chicago (Mike Davis came last week and won his first match and lost the second at DMP).

I hope the rest of the country (and other countries) will do what we are doing here in Chicago: the first time to come to a live event it is free, and after that they will only have to pay half price (I am personally paying the other half of their entry fee if they come, and I am sure others will be willing to do the same to encourage these young, new players to come to live events.) Also, when they come the first time, we sit down with them and make sure they are comfortable with the rules about shaking the dice, cocked dice, fast rolling, score keeping etc. We have also offered all without transportation rides to and from the tournaments.

So let's not worry about their only wanting to play on line to start...with time and encouragement, eventually they will start coming to tournaments.
