Three out of your four suggestions sound reasonable but I would oppose changing the rules for doublets from the bar. This will either change the game a lot, which is a nuisance for anyone who has invested a lot of effort tuning his or her intuition to the current ruleset, or it won't change the game much, in which case it won't be worth the bother.

For an example of the kind of thing that could change a lot: Standard cube reference positions with a checker on the bar would probably all have to be recalculated.
