In Response To: tough checkerplay decision? -- ROLLOUT (Chuck Bower)

Nice problem, Chuck. When looking at this problem, I couldn't decide between 24/18 9/8 and 9/2. Seems like 9/2 is a whopper.

As for why 24/18 must be the 6, I think it's just that since your goal is to race, your checker is much better situated at the edge of the prime, on the 23pt, than on the 24pt. I don't think connectivity is the issue. For example, try changing the roll to 51 instead of 61. Then you'll see that the must-play part of the roll is 24/23. With a roll of 51, 23/18 together with an ace up front is a massive blunder, so I think the connectivity isn't worth squat.
