cube decision

The important thing to remember is that you are far ahead in the race. So unless you are hit and are contained, you will win from here. Also, you have a 4-point board, so your own hits have some power behind them. Now, look again at the position. There are several variations to consider:

1. You are missed. These are good variations for you. You have two spares, so you are not immediately forced from the anchor, you have a 4-point board so your opponent can not freely leave a bunch of shots. You can win by rolling doublets, or by being missed when you run from the anchor, or by hitting a fly shot and a subsequent dance.

2. You are hit, but can hit back immediately. This again is a good variation. If your opponent dances, you will have the chance to hit another one, and gain some tempi to bring your checkers around the board.

3. You are hit, enter, but miss the returns. Usually you safety your blot. Usually you are not forced from your anchor quickly in these scenarios, and will move your back checker up to the bar anchor. You retain a race lead. Again, not very worrisome.

4. You are hit and dances. This is bad because your opponent may well pick up another checker next turn.

In all cases, you'd have cube ownership, the potential to kill gammons against you, and the possibility to give a dead cube. This is an easy take, but it is easy to miss-evaluate this completely. And even when playing out, it is easy to think that the taker is just lucky, because many wins are ugly (hitting a fly shot, rolling timely doubles, getting missed when leaving many shots...). However, the ugly wins just happen a lot from here.
