- 1: 10/5 6/5
- Gammon save or no, Blue still has got to play backgammon, the big 5pt is there for the taking, and the stack on 6 is begging to go there. White has no board, so there is not much danger yet, and the bar point offer some protection, so making the 20pt anchor is not that important. The 20pt and bar point don't go together that well either, and having two stripped points to clear later when White has beefed up his board is not too tempting. Finally, there does not seem to be a good 5 to go with 21/20 in any case. That's a lot of talk for stating the obvious ... the 5pt is still the 5pt!
- 2: 4/1* 2/1
- 6/5 6/3 seems to be the way to go if Blue does not want to leave the direct shot - a fairly compact position, some attack potential against the ace with the small combos, and only 4 indirects. The 6pt will stay open though, and even in the good variations White will probably get indirects, even in a good variation where Blue points and White dances, Blue will want to release his mid while White is on the bar, and will typically leave 4 to 6 indirects. Other variations are typically worse. So it might be worth it to leave the 11 shot to put white on the bar and be about even money to make it next turn. In addition this play gains quite a bit of gammons, and while it may lose some gammons too it then reduces White's recube value - as he will have trouble getting an efficient recube in. I go for the gusto here.
- 3: 14/2* 6/2
- Aiming for an efficient recube, Blue does not want to give White immediate counterplay here. With one back and WHite's position generally good, PoH / dance does not seem to be much overkill, just a good cash.
- 4: 13/4 13/10
- The solid play is 13/4 with another 3 somewhere, Blue is chasing gammons and 21/18 is tempting, otoh I guess most gammons come from actually being able to close the board - and White's mass of outfield checkers will still secure the gammon, so 13/10 seems better to me - and avoids the antidup of 4 and 6 as well. The big question is - can Blue do even better, 8/5(2) is tempting too, making the best point, and releasing the 8 that does not go well with the two. Then the 4 point is left slotted, but it is still not favourite to get hit, and it is half a point. In this case I think the rest of the play is 13/10(2) bearing safely on the 4pt slot, while getting 2 checkers in to the zone so that after a hit - rehit Blue still has another builder aiming there. I still suspect that the best way to go for the gammon is to not let White get any initiative with a hit, so I choose solidly.
- 5: 8/1*
- One man back - attack attack. Here it seems clearer as the less White's outfield checkers get to move, the more gammons.
