Daily Quiz 4/29

- 1. 10/4 6/4
- Normally two good things are better than one, and 24/22 13/7* both anchors and hits, while 10/4 6/4 only makes a point. But the point is a better point - although the anchor is nice, the 3pt anchor isn't that hot, really. And although hitting is nice, it leaves many return hits - 15 in all, and racewise hitting actually is a pip loser. Finally, making the point puts the question to White what to do with her blots, and her 5s are duplicated all over.
- 2. 15/11 13/10
- Very much in doubt here. The 5pt is the 5pt, and releasing the 8pt is less of a concession with the made 2pt. However, Blue has a racing lead, 1 back to White's 2, and no anchor. This points to a safe play. Also, the safe plays create a lot of builders making it not unlikely to make the 5pt naturally later, and hopefully with the spares on the 6pt. So 15/11, and then to choose a 3. Of the builder plays, I like 13/10 better than 11/8, even at the cost of a few extra shots - it gives an extra builder as the 8pt can still be broken to build a better point, and it keeps the 11pt as a backstop, and for additional return hits if a builder gets hit. The question is whether it is better to avoid the extra builder and the extra shots altogether and advance the back checker. That allows White to hit loose, but opens up the secondary plan of just running the checker. As I said, not sure, but I like keeping it out of harms way for now and not be too exposed on both sides.
- 3. 11/5 6/5
- Ripping away the builder and making sure White is short of ammo is tempting, but so is making the big 5pt, and making it hard for White to make a better anchor. White already has three back, and I think it is more important now to make sure that they are well contained. The 11pt builder isn't currently too active with the 5pt made, and any White attack will not be too strong - and Blue's made 5pt will help if White hits loose. Compared with last position where I did forego the 5pt, here Blue has less chances of making it naturally.
- 4. 5/2*(2) 4/1*(2)
- Finally an easy problem, Blue wants to attack, and 4/1*(2) 5/2* seems called for. With putting as many as 5 on bar Blue should definitely hit loose to try to prevent a white anchor. The last 3 seems best 5/2 activating the 10pt checker as a builder, and making it easier to reach the open point for the men coming round - also if White does get to anchor, the anchor will be easier to get past if it is high. Blue has one stepped up checker already, and the man on 21 does have 6s to jump already, so 21/18 does not seem necessary.
- 5. Double/take
- Blue has a good blockade, White has many stripped points, a silly checker on the ace, and can get awkward fast. Behind in the match I think Blue must double this. White does have the anchor, and Blue also has three back, and White does have useful points, and must take.
