Alternative to byes

Here's one possible alternatives to random byes: bid for them. If matches are to 9 points, I would be willing to let my opponent start at 2-0 in the second round in order to get a bye. I will put that on a form and give that to the tournament director. If someone else is willing to spot his opponent 3 points, he will get the bye instead of me. If there is a tie, those players will be given the opportunity to submit a new, sealed bid to break the tie, and if it is still a tie, then there is drawing to see who gets the bye, but he still has to give the spot he had bid.

The same process can be used when you have an event where you end up with three players. Let each submit a sealed bid as to how many points they are willing to spot their opponent to automatically be in the finals.
