Generally, I will require any illegal play to be played correctly -- the only exception would be if my opponent has abused rules or fair play against me in the past. To have a legal play corrected is not appropriate, in my opinion. Had you overlooked a superior play in favor of an inferior play, would he have allowed you to correct it since you obviously know the superior play? Where do you draw the line? I draw the line at legal vs. illegal. If a play is legal, regardless of how stupid or inadvertent it may be, or if it originated from oversight, distraction, or stupidity, I feel compelled to accept the play. If a play is illegal, I feel compelled to have it replayed as lega.
