Let me take Neil's comments a little further. By staying back, your opponent has two points to clear, the eleven and the six. By stepping out, you give up your play against the six point. Look at the sequence 53 (6-1, 6-3), 32 (8-5, 7-5), 51 after each play.

Of course, getting four extra shots is worth a lot. In this case, you just give up too much of your later play in exchange. The fundamental is "stay back".
