In Response To: rules/ethics question: consciously playing your best (Chuck Bower)

For some reason, the term "breach of ethics" doesn't sit well with me in this situation, but I would say that it violates the spirit of competition to intentionally "throw" a match. Whether the considerations you mention are more important than respecting the spirit of competition is a judgment call that I think is difficult to legislate.
