I believe that in this specific situation the player is supposed to try to win, since his actions affect not only the match in question, but subsequent matches.

That's theory. In practice I would chalk it up to "director's discretion." There are times, like the Fernandez-Brown scandal some years back, or the Dwek-Genud finals, where one or both players are trying to fix the outcome of a match. But if I were the director, watching the sequence Chuck just described, I'd ignore it. Maybe both players suffered cranial flatulence.
