But even this can be problematic, and is probably best avoided in serious competition.

It can make the other player feel inferior, and make him nervous. He can become unsure of your motives for telling you, and distrust your advice. You may have misread the position and actually be giving him bad advice :-)

In relaxed competition of course most anything goes, and new players are often grateful for advice, but not everybody, so even here it is probably good to ask if they think it is OK to receive comments on their play during play.
