rules/ethics question: consciously playing your best

Although he may have been a little tongue-in-cheek, Chris brings up an interesting issue. We have a rule in backgammon which, depending on how you interpret it, could mean: "A integral part of the game is identifying opponent's illegal plays and making the correct decision as to whether to have the play stand or have opponent make a legal play instead."
If this is a integral part of the game in the sense that it's like deciding whether or not to cube your opponent, then making an agreement with your opponent to play "legal moves only" would be along the same lines as agreeing with your opponent never to turn the cube during the match.
It is pretty clear that the latter agreement above should not be allowed. So the question is, how can you tell from reading the U.S. tournament rules that an agreement to play legal moves only doesn't fall in the same category?
