In Response To: rules/ethics question: consciously playing your best (Tom Keith)

But why, then, are illegal plays allowed to stand?

While there are all sorts of debates on legal moves and whether people prefer it or not, the short answer I give to this question is that there is nothing that will ever ensure that a player observing an illegal move to his own advantage will require its correction, particularly because it is usually reasonable to assume that his opponent is unaware of it. Allowing both players to condone illegal plays removes this potential edge from the cheat. Amongst honest players who are agreeable, this measure of protection is unnecessary.
