Call it what you may. At the same tournament, Richard Munitz, a Giant of Backgammon, forgot that I had a checker on the bar and took two checkers off leaving a blot -- though he had a perfectly safe play not leaving a blot. His play, though an oversight, was legal -- I let it stand. He obviously knew better. Did I not 'play fairly'? Was I 'extremely lucky'? Richard accepted responsibility for his miscue. Where do YOU draw the line?
It is not always black and white -- there are shades of gray. I differentiate between legal and illegal moves -- legal stand, illegal are played over. Some think even the illegal should stand -- and the RULES allow one to opt for solution. I cannot and will not denigrate someone for playing in accordance with the rules. We all know them, or at least have access to them, prior to play. Bill Calton, graciously, accepted his mistake and acknowledged Ray played in accordance with the rules. What more do you want? Lobby to have it changed if you disagree.
(and, of course, I missed the blot ... lmao)
