In Response To: Northwestern University Students Have No Respect (Bill Riles)

Thanks, Bill. This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping to get from the backgammon community. And many, like you, have been extremely supportive, not just with their words and encouragement, which is important, but with money. One of the things I really needed for these college and the high school kids was boards and money for boards...I've made a couple of appeals and the result was that many very generous people have donated money and as a result there are hundreds of new and used backgammon boards out there in the hands of children all over the country.

You offer to contribute toward entry fees is another great way to help get these kids to come to tournaments. The Barpoint Club has a policy that any first time player plays free, and that's great. As for the college students, I simply pay half of their entry fee out of my pocket to make it easier and cheaper for them to come (and I buy then dinner their first time they come as well). Others have offered to pay their USBGF membership so they could play in the Nationals and participate in our ongoing events.

This is all a new program and we're feeling our way...eventually I would like to see a separate "students fund" that we can draw on to help pay for boards, entry fees, scholarships for national titles (we just awarded $900 total for the UCLA team members who won the Nationals last month), and even cover some of the travel and hotel expenses for major events.

The big thing is that not only are we seeing these college clubs starting (we're up to 27 colleges with clubs and many more ready to start in the fall), but now we are already seeing that these kids are starting to come to live events as well. Hopefully they will catch the bug and when they are out of college, get a job, and have some spare cash and time, they will become regulars on the ABT tour.
