Northwestern University Students Have No Respect

I would be inclined to use donations to fund the student's initial entry into an ABT event or to reduce transportation or lodging costs. That might help break the ice getting them into the big time. If you start paying their entry to a local club for them, I would expect you will lose them when they eventually have to start paying themselves. I think it is a mistake to pay for local club entries past the initial visit.

Another idea which I would prefer to paying local entry fees is giving them money added for their own University-only tournaments.

OTB Backgammon players need to get used to paying entry fees.
