Research on the Rules

In Response To: Research on the Rules (Bill Riles)

When I play a match, win or lose, I want to walk away from the table knowing that my opponent and I both gave our very best efforts.

And this very sentence of yours is exactly the reason why Arda decided to let me correct my oversight! He wanted to beat me playing at my best.

Imagine this hypothetical situation: you're playing in the world championship finals against an extremely strong player. Suddenly, in the middle of the match this player gets very sick. You decide to give him some time to recover and tournament director allows for a longer break. After 20 minutes or so you both return to play and he is still very sick, hardly sitting at the table. The end of the match is near and tournament director requests that you finish it, despite your opponent's condition. You continue to play and your opponent makes a totally stupid oversight, something similar to what I did. You are 100% certain that it was unintentional and you are also aware of his very bad health condition which certainly caused this oversight. Do you still play by the rules and take advantage of his misfortune by not allowing him to take back his move? Would you really want to become world champion of backgammon in such way? I hope your answer is a resounding NO.

Now, I am fully aware that this hypothetical situation is quite different than the one that happened in my match against Arda.
I was "only" tired, much less of a misfortune then suddenly becoming sick, but STILL a misfortune. One that Arda did not want to take advantage of (even though he could have). And this is what fairplay is all about.

I hope this at least helps you understand Arda's (and Casper's) point of view a bit better even if you still disagree with them.
